Podcasting

"A podcast is an audio recording that is saved as an MP3 file and made available on the Internet through RSS." (Crismond, Howland, Jonassen Marra pg. 160)  Users can subscribe to a users podcasts or just simply choose any random users content that they choose to listen to.  It enables anyone to be an independent producer and distributor of audio or video content that can be offered through the internet.  It could be used in class for a simple group project. The teacher could subscribe to their podcast and listen to it and give them a grade on that.  The students could subscribe to the teachers podcast and the teacher could put each lecture online for the student to make sure they didn't miss anything.  There are many uses that podcasting could be used for in the classroom.

Podcasting is similar to other Web 2.0 applications we've discovered in this class because it does not require face to face communication.  These have all been online applications and have been very interesting to learn about.  It is different because it is more broad.  Anyone can subscribe to a podcast and the user will never know how the subscribers feel about their podcast.  The subscriber could give a reply via making their own podcast which would be very interesting and a great use of technology in my opinion.

I do own an Ipod and I only use it for music.  I use it nearly everyday because I love music.  I am honestly not very interested in what some people have to say.  I looked at podcasts and some of it just seemed ignorant.  I do think it could be very useful in a classroom setting though.  I would use it in the classroom like I stated in the paragraph above.  It would be a tool that could be used to be a review over the lecture or to capture the highlights of the lesson.  Plus it could be used as an interactive activity between the teacher and the student by having the teacher subscribe to the students podcasts.  I do not see any disadvantages in podcasting if you use it for a reviewing tool and not just to base the whole classroom on podcasting.  The teacher can subscribe to the students and the teacher can put "Attention: John Doe" if they need to get a certain students attention.  I think it could be a very useful tool.

  1. I agree with you that I really don't care what some people have to say. Also i agreee that it is a really good tool to use in the classroom. Especially in math, if i'm remembering right for your subject, you can write something in notes and get home and it doesn't make sense. If your lecture is up on a podcast then the can go back and listen again to understand their notes.

  2. I have an iPod and I only use it for music too…it is funny how we have certain technology tools but we do not think of them as educational tools! As teachers we could also use podcasting for tutorials if the students are not available for the scheduled tutorials. I think this will be nice for those students who are shy, afraid or even embarrassed to ask for help.

I thought this was interesting and I am now more concerned about the time I would spend setting my podcasting subscription and download it to my iPod. I guess it is all just a matter of knowing about such tools so that we access it as early as possible to avoid procrastination which is what I usually do. But I do realize that technology tools are as close to us as a few clicks away.

  3. Richard Smith-Podcasts are great for radio listeners that miss out on a broadcast, but agreed with you also that alot of radio pod casts are just ridiculous. I think that everyone could agree that we only consider our technology gadgets as just personal toys when they could be used for so much more than just the simple uses that we use them for.

  4. I agree, I also like the idea of using podcasts for review purposes. There isn't a downside that I can see right off hand, assuming the teacher does his/her job and still reviews in the classroom as well. With the podcast, any students who need extra review time can have it, right there on their iPod. It could be an excellent addition to a classroom.

  5. I agree with you, I-pods and pod-casting are a great attribute for the class because you can have notes or study guides for tests on you at all times, if you carry your I-pod with you. Another great thing you could use your I-pod for in class is to record the lecture of the teacher/professor.

A disadvantage I found is that permitting the I-pods in your classroom could cause some students to play games or listen to music when you are not paying attention which causes them to not focus on the class.
